KS-Lintels
KS-Lintels
are pre-fabricated building components used to span openings in walls. There are two types of lintels: KS Flat Lintels (h <= 12.5 cm), for which the compression zone (masonry above the lintels) is created at the building site - determined according to the guidline for flat lintels; and KS Pre-fabricated Lintels (h <= 24.8 cm) - determined according to general building inspection approval.
KS-Flat Lintels
Pre-fabricated KS Flat Lintels in widths of 115 to 240 mm and nominal lengths of 875 to 3000 mm are used to span wall openings in load-bearing and non-load-bearing interior walls, in rear masonry wythes of two-wythe walls as well as in exposed brickwork. The Lintels are made of reinforced and concreted KS blocks which are designed according to the guideline for the design and installation of flat lintels (Flat Lintel Guideline, revised version, 1979). The approved span loads are calculated from the lintel width, lap length on the supporting bricks, type and height of masonry above and reinforcement (see type statistics of the producer). When covering the lintels with masonry above, the end joints are to be mortared so that a compression arch may be formed.
KS Flat Lintels may only be used in the case of indirect loads. Direct strain as in the case of concentrated loads (such as under roof beams) is not approved.
During installation, flat lintels with an opening width of over 1.25 m are to be singly supported; flat lintels with an opening width of over 2.5 m are to be doubly supported.
Frost resistant bricks in accordance with DIN v 106-2 are to be used for the brickwork, the lintels and the covering brickwork. The mortar joints with these lintels are generally hollowed in the outer brick area and hard foam strips are applied. These are removed when jointing exposed brickwork, and the joints may be evenly filled with joint mortar in the lintel and normal brickwork areas.
